in the quiet of the night
by susan frankovich
~~~~~~~
i went to her
in the quiet of the night
i wanted to wake her
to feel her arms around me
to tell her my fears
but she looked so fragile
lying there
it was selfish of me
to go there expecting
her to help fight my war
when she has her own
battle wounds to heal
but i went to her
knowing that somehow
just seeing her would
give me the strength
i needed
i gently touched her hair
then fell to my knees
and silently screamed
for all that i took
from her and all that i
can never give her
i don't know how long
i knelt beside her bed
or how many tears i wept
but as i watched her
sleeping there
one thing became clearer
to me than ever before
i love her
i softly kissed her forehead
and made a promise
to her and to myself
that as long as i'm breathing
i will fight for her
and i will fight for us
and then i left her
stepping out of the darkness
and into the quiet of the night
